Styling Suede: Your Guide to Summer Outfit Ideas

One thing to know about me is that I love breaking fashion rules.

For example, no white after Labor Day doesn’t stand a chance against me and winter whites.

And while I don’t quite personally adhere to the idea of a traditional capsule wardrobe, I like to think that everything in my closet can be worn year-round with some thoughtful styling.

While it sounds counter intuitive to break out your suede pieces in July, I actually love styling this fabric during the summer.

The trick to wearing suede in the summer is focusing on lightweight accessories and layering pieces instead of head-to-toe suede outfits.

Small doses of suede can really elevate your look without feeling too heavy or looking out of place.

A little texture can go a long way and can make even a simple suede tank top and linen shorts feel like a step beyond the t-shirt and denim shorts summer uniform we already know and love.

Let’s talk about some ideas for suede summer outfit ideas to try this year.

Styling Suede for Summer

Here are four suede pieces in my closet that I wear throughout the summer season.

Suede jacket

In my eyes, a light suede jacket is the perfect layering piece when you want to look put together.

It’s a great staple for work and the office, especially during the summer when they crank up the air conditioning inside.

I also have styled this for evening dinner dates or brunches and other special occasions like bridal showers or baby showers.

During the summer I will most often reach for my denim jacket, but this feels like a more sophisticated option.

Suede vest

I really enjoyed seeing everyone’s Coachella outfits this year and even did a whole podcast episode talking about music festivals.

To me the suede, fringe vest reminds me of my days working at Free People.

It evokes a carefree, bohemian vibe and the best part about it is that it adds layers without adding too much weight to an outfit.

I love fall and winter style because I can layer many pieces to create interesting outfits, but summer sometimes makes me lose that layering creativity.

This is a fun way to add more interest to your average outfit, whether that’s a tank top and jeans or a simple sun dress.

Suede shoes

Elvis was right to write a song about suede shoes, because suede might genuinely be the most comfortable material for flats and sandals.

Granted these are not blue since they’d be covered in dirt within one millisecond of walking in New York City, but I love them just the same.

These brown suede flats are so comfortable and I find they break in faster than any of my regular leather shoes.

Catch me wearing these anytime the temperature is above 45 degrees honestly.

Suede bag

I’m so excited that I finally caved and bought my dream bag a few weeks ago from Coach.

When I first discovered this silhouette I debated being sensible and getting the leather, but in my heart I really wanted the suede and have no regrets.

The suede of this bag is surprisingly lightweight, so I can easily fit everything I need inside without the bag feeling overly heavy

I think this bag pairs perfectly with a maxi dress or even with tailored shorts and a jacket layered over top.

Summer suede styling FAQ’s

What other fabrics does suede pair well with for summer?

I loved the outfit from this post where I paired the suede bag with an eyelet dress and thought that was a fun contrast that gave a bohemian vibe.

I also think suede pairs well with denim, like the outfit with the suede vest and white jeans. The denim keeps things approachable and grounded.

To keep things light so you don’t overheat in the summer, I’d also pair suede with natural fabrics like cotton and linen.

When should I not wear suede in the summer?

Is it cloudy with a chance of literally any moisture in the air? That’s reason enough to leave suede at home!

I would also avoid bringing suede pieces to the beach, they’d be better suited for happy hour drinks or running errands in your town.

What colors of suede should I wear in the summer?

As with general summer fashion guidance, I would say that lighter colors will help keep you cool when the temperatures are high.

Ever since doing my color analysis, I’ve been trying to lean into shades of brown more so you’ll see most of my suede pieces are a spectrum of brown.

However, I think that you can have fun with the suede pieces you buy.

Consider shopping colors like baby blue (possibly the official color of summer 2026), red for a fun colorful accent or even cream so long as you are less clumsy than me.

How should I care for my suede pieces?

Suede does best when it is stored out of direct sunlight to prevent any fading.

You may also consider using a spray suede protector to help prevent damage or keeping a suede brush handy.

I also found a few cute suede pieces that I found online lately in case you want to stock up on anything this season.

Suede for Summer featuring lightweight suede pieces

Between the return of boho style from festival season this year and the ongoing love of western-inspired accessories, suede has quickly become one of the biggest texture trends of the year.

What do you think of these tips? I hope this gives you some ideas for how to style suede for summer.

If you need even more summer outfit ideas for this season, I’ve got you covered.
