A Tenant Is So Overwhelmed by His Landlord’s Rules He Barely Leaves His Bedroom With His Dog

Renting a room from someone in the house they own is always a tricky proposition.

And you never really know what kind of situation you’ll find yourself in until you’re already moved in and trying to go with the flow.

In today’s story, a man explained why his living situation renting a room in someone’s house has turned into a horror show.

Read on and see what he had to say about what’s going on.

“People should not rent rooms in their house if they don’t actually want another person living with them, and all that that comes with.

While I don’t pretend to be perfect, I do think I’ve been as patient and accommodating as I could possibly be without further inconveniencing myself to an unfair degree.

I pay too much to be expected to act like a shadow and let someone else dictate how everything is done.

Let’s go down the list…

Things I can’t wait to do in my own space:

– Not have to keep my dog in the bedroom 90% of the time because they work from home in the common areas and don’t want to deal with any inconvenience, while their dogs roam free.

Then getting annoyed and mad at me that he’s developing anxious behavioral problems which I also am only allowed to address in ways they approve of or that don’t inconvenience them.

Seriously this has been SO BAD for my dog, he’s regressed and I am constantly trying to appease the moody housemate while addressing behavioral changes under very strict limitations.

What?!?!

– Speaking of common areas, being able to USE common areas. When your housemate works in the living room, then watches TV in the living room, and gets annoyed when too much is going on around them, you pretty much never get to enjoy that space or it’s treated as a luxurious rare treat.

I am so, so tired of living out of a bedroom. It wasn’t even this bad when I previously lived with multiple people, because at least none of them spent 24/7 camping in the common areas.

– Have my own appliances in the kitchen.

– Be able to walk past the doorway with shoes on without causing a freakout (aka not having to fully remove them just to grab something off a table).

Nobody wants to live like this…

– Not have to worry about coming home to one of the following:

A bad mood or medical thing they admit will make them irritable, unpleasant and easily triggered.

Something breaking or going wrong because this person is literally cursed.

A cleaning spree or the expectation that I must clean something because their germaphobic OCD is acting up. (I’m not even a dirty person, I just don’t think you need to soap-and-water scrub dishes BEFORE running them through the dishwasher).

This really does sound awful.

A problem or inconvenience I or my dog unknowingly caused by virtue of existing and living there and not being able to predict what housemate was going to get up to during the day (“so and so came today and your dog started going nuts barking.”

Well gee, if I was allowed to use my doggy cam I would have known this, and if he wasn’t trapped in a room while strangers came and went from what he THINKS is his house maybe he wouldn’t freak out….?)

This isn’t everything, but just…I’m so tired of this stuff. I’ve had good and bad roommate experiences, but the worst ones were always when the other person considered the space primarily THEIRS.

Renting means compromise. When you start asserting too much control over how another person lives, or expect them to fully bend themselves around you and your preferences, you are no longer fit to be living with renters.”
