Sneakers with Jeans – My Best Styling Tips
Jeans and sneakers are a timeless combination like peanut butter and jelly.
But even though you know they go together, you may have questions about how they go together.
I’m here to help you visualize which sneakers pair best with which style of jeans by breaking down the styles of jeans and sneakers you may be wearing and I’m also answering some of the most popular questions about this outfit combination.
I’m also sharing a dozen outfits that I’ve worn over the years to show you the magic that can happen when you bring jeans and sneakers together.
Types of jeans
Before we get into specific examples, there are really a few key styles of jeans that I think are helpful to know.
This way when you’re looking through your own closet or shopping for denim you can choose your favorite style based on what you like best and what you feel comfortable in.
I also created a graphic to show my favorite sneaker pairings for each style of denim. This is to help give you an idea of which silhouettes look good together.
With that being said, the top denim silhouettes to know are:
Straight/skinny
Straight and skinny jeans are a more fitted silhouette, hugging the legs or falling in a straight line from hip to ankle. These are the easiest styles to dress up or down and a pair of medium wash straight legs jeans is a great wardrobe staple.
Cropped
Cropped jeans hit above the ankle, making them perfect for showing off your favorite pair of sneakers. They offer a casual, laid-back vibe and work well in warmer seasons or worn with taller socks in the fall.
Relaxed fit
Relaxed fit jeans have a looser, more baggy silhouette that gives off an effortlessly cool look. They pair best with chunkier, high top sneakers to balance out the volume of the denim.
Flare/bootcut
Flare jeans are fitted through the thigh and widen from the knee down, adding a touch of retro flair. They look especially flattering with platform or heeled sneakers that peek out from underneath, while adding height.
12 outfit ideas styling sneakers and jeans
I thought a few real world styling examples would also help give you ideas for what combinations of sneakers and jeans to try yourself.
Cropped straight leg jeans + high top sneakers
Pairing light wash jeans with high-top sneakers keeps your whole look fresh and casual while letting the shoes take center stage. I styled this outfit with an oversized blazer in a neutral color for a more polished look but you could also add a graphic tee or oversized top for a sporty vibe.
Distressed hem denim + tennis sneakers
I wore this outfit on a surprisingly chilly day in Los Angeles when we visited last. The raw hem of these jeans and the ripped knee adds texture, while my minimal, white tennis sneakers keep the outfit clean and polished. For a more dressy look, you could swap the oversized sweatshirt for a nicer knit top.
Ankle crop jeans + high top sneakers
High-top sneakers balance out the cropped ankle jeans and add a playful edge. Since both the jeans and sneakers are black, it helps elongate the legs and makes it easy to add a bold statement piece like this red teddy coat. Perfect for a day spent downtown in the city.

Skinny jeans + high top sneakers
Skinny jeans tuck neatly into high-tops for a slightly edgy feel. This reminds me of peak early 2000s outfits that I used to see in the PacSun catalogue when it would come in the mail. Style this combo with a graphic tee or tank to lean into skate culture or add a fitted top or sweater to make it a bit more elevated.

Distressed cropped denim + streetwear sneakers
Distressed cropped jeans look great with a classic white sneaker or tennis shoe. When my jeans are ripped I like to pair them with a fitted or chic top to balance it out. For this look, I also threw on a colorful plaid coat making this a great outfit for transitional weather.

Straight leg cropped jeans + tennis sneakers
A classic combo that’s equal parts chic and effortless, this look works with almost anything on top—here I’m wearing a cropped blouse with white flutter sleeves, but swap in a plain long-sleeve top for a more minimal vibe. The low-profile sneakers keep the whole look light.

Medium rise denim + high top sneakers
This combo channels effortless cool, with the high-tops giving the medium-rise jeans a casual, street-style touch. A ribbed tank or body-hugging top adds balance to the proportions, but if you wanted to go for an even more laid-back look you could swap in a graphic tee.

Relaxed fit denim + platform sneakers
Relaxed fit jeans pair perfectly with platform sneakers for a modern silhouette with extra height. Since my jacket is long and covers most of the outfit, where the sneakers peek out from under my jeans brightens up the outfit a bit and helps break up the look visually.
Straight leg jeans + tennis sneakers
Timeless and flattering, straight-leg jeans and sleek tennis sneakers make the perfect everyday duo. I find white sneakers and black jeans to be such an easy combination to wear and it gives you so many options for what to wear on top!

Cropped straight leg denim + low top sneakers
This combo is great for spring or summer—the light wash denim feels fresh, and the low-top sneakers keep the look airy and casual. I chose to layer this outfit with this cool studded denim jacket that I had in the back of my closet and I wore my white purse with this look to pick up on the white of my sneakers.

Mom jeans + low top sneakers
Mom jeans bring the vintage vibes, while low-top sneakers keep the look balanced. Consider topping off this look with a cute blazer for a look that feels more professional or choose a colorful camisole for a more casual weekend outfit.

Baggy fit jeans + low top sneakers
Oversized denim and sleek low-tops create a cool, contrast-heavy silhouette. Go bold on top with a colorful piece like this oversized sweater to add additional interest to the look or on the other end of the spectrum choose a fitted top for a more simple look.
My hope is that these outfits show you there are lots of ways to style jeans and sneakers even when the pairing may seem unexpected.

- If you’re going for a more polished or preppy look, you may want a pair of cropped jeans that pair with simple tennis sneakers.
- But don’t be afraid to experiment! You may love the look of a high top sneaker with a pair of cropped flare jeans or how a sleek tennis sneaker looks styled under a pair of barrel jeans.
What kind of socks should I wear with jeans and sneakers?
- Try no-show socks with low-tops for a clean look, or go for visible crew socks when wearing high-tops to embrace a cool, streetwear-inspired style.
How do I style jeans and sneakers for a dressier look?
- Stick to clean, minimal sneakers (like leather tennis shoes) and pair them with more tailored jeans like a skinny or straight leg style.
