15 Scary Video Games That May Make You Sleep With The Lights On

Horror games do something horror films cannot: they hand you the flashlight and make the bad decisions yours. The fifteen games below are the ones players still name when the lights-on question comes up — survival horror, co-op panics, ghost stories and a couple of wolves in visual-novel clothing.

A note on how this list was built: four games from the original roundup were dropped because they could not be properly matched to a real, buyable edition (two are digital-only, and two had no verifiable listing), so what remains are editions you can genuinely find. If your taste runs more heroic than haunted, my list of PlayStation games so good you would replay them from scratch is the brighter shelf. 1. Resident Evil — Start With Resident Evil 4 (PS5)

Resident Evil — Start With Resident Evil 4 (PS5)

The series that defined survival horror has been running since 1996: a shadowy corporation, a virus that does not stay in the lab, and ordinary people trapped in places that want them dead. If you are coming in fresh, the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 is the modern front door — Leon Kennedy’s rescue mission in a rural Spanish village, rebuilt with current controls and visuals, and regularly called one of the finest remakes ever made. It carries the whole series’ DNA: scarce ammo, creeping dread, and monsters that punish panic.

2. Silent Hill — Start With Silent Hill 2 (PS5)

Silent Hill — Start With Silent Hill 2 (PS5)

Where Resident Evil jumps, Silent Hill lingers. The fog-drowned town has been gaming’s capital of psychological horror since 1999, turning guilt and grief into geography. The essential stop is Silent Hill 2 — James Sunderland, a letter from his late wife, and a town that knows exactly what he did — and the 2024 remake for PS5 rebuilds it faithfully for modern players. Play it as the series’ representative: slower, sadder and more disturbing than almost anything else on this list.

3. Doom — The Classics Collection (PS4)

Doom — The Classics Collection (PS4)

The 1993 original did not invent the first-person shooter, but it made it immortal: a lone space marine, the moons of Mars, and an invasion straight out of hell. Doom’s horror is speed and saturation rather than stealth — corridors full of demons and just enough shotgun shells. The Classics Collection for PS4 puts DOOM, DOOM II and DOOM 3 on one disc, which is the cleanest way to own the games that started it all.

4. Dead Space (PS5 Remake)

Dead Space (PS5 Remake)

Engineer Isaac Clarke boards the USG Ishimura to repair it and find his partner; what he finds is a dead crew reanimated as Necromorphs by an alien artifact. Dead Space’s masterstroke is its combat logic — stop shooting for the chest and start taking limbs off. The 2023 remake for PS5 rebuilds the ship with modern lighting and sound, and the sound alone will raise your heart rate. Sci-fi horror does not get much better engineered than this.

5. F.E.A.R. (PlayStation 3)

F.E.A.R. (PlayStation 3)

A military shooter possessed by a ghost story. You are the point man of a special unit sent after an escaped psychic commander, and a barefoot girl in a red dress keeps appearing where she cannot be. F.E.A.R. mixes genuinely smart enemy AI with slow-motion ‘reflex time’ gunfights — and then ruins your composure with apparitions between the firefights. This listing is the PlayStation 3 edition, the console version that brought Alma’s haunting to the couch.

6. Left 4 Dead — Game Of The Year Edition (Xbox 360)

Left 4 Dead — Game Of The Year Edition (Xbox 360)

Four survivors, a city of infected, and an AI ‘Director’ that watches how well you are doing and rearranges the nightmare to keep you humble. Left 4 Dead is co-op horror at its purest: the Special Infected — Hunters, Smokers, the earth-shaking Tank — exist to punish any player who wanders off alone. The Game of the Year Edition for Xbox 360 includes the Survival Pack content, and with four controllers and four friends it remains the benchmark every co-op zombie game is measured against.

7. Dead By Daylight (PS4)

Dead By Daylight (PS4)

One Killer, four Survivors, and a forest full of hooks. Dead by Daylight turns slasher films into an asymmetric multiplayer match: Survivors repair generators and escape, the Killer hunts them for a entity that feeds on hope. Matches are short, brutal and endlessly replayable, and the roster has grown for years through extra chapters — note that this PS4 disc is the base game, with later chapters sold separately. Few games make being chased this much fun.

8. Hunt: Showdown (PS4)

Hunt: Showdown (PS4)

Louisiana, 1895: you and a partner track a monstrous bounty through a rotting swamp while rival hunters — real players — hunt the same prize, and you. Hunt: Showdown’s cruelty is its stakes: die, and your hunter and their gear are gone for good. This is the original PlayStation 4 edition of Crytek’s extraction nightmare (the current ‘1896’ version lives on newer consoles), and its creaking, gothic dread still stands apart from every other shooter here.

9. Alien: Isolation (PS4)

Alien: Isolation (PS4)

There is exactly one alien on Sevastopol Station, and you cannot kill it. Playing as Amanda Ripley, Ellen’s daughter, you hide in lockers, hold your breath and watch a motion tracker that tells you the Xenomorph is close — never how close. Alien: Isolation’s creature AI famously learns your habits, so every hiding spot has an expiry date. It is the most faithful Alien experience ever made, and for many players still the single scariest game on this list.

10. Outlast — Trinity Edition (PS4)

Outlast — Trinity Edition (PS4)

Journalist Miles Upshur breaks into Mount Massive Asylum with a camcorder and no weapon — a decision the game punishes for hours. Outlast is found-footage horror you play: night vision draining batteries, inmates called Variants hunting you through the dark, and running as your only real verb. The Trinity edition for PS4 bundles the original, its Whistleblower chapter and Outlast 2 on one disc — the complete descent in a single box.

11. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! (PS5)

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! (PS5)

It looks like a sweet visual novel about a school literature club. It is not. Doki Doki Literature Club begins as a gentle dating-sim story and then corrodes — characters glitch, poems darken, and the game starts reaching through the fourth wall at the player directly. The original is free on PC; this Plus! edition for PS5 is the expanded console version with additional side stories, and going in knowing as little as possible is strongly advised. The less said, the worse it gets — in the best way.

12. The Quarry (PS4)

The Quarry (PS4)

Supermassive’s slasher-movie simulator: nine camp counsellors, one last night at Hackett’s Quarry, and something in the woods. The Quarry plays like an interactive horror film — explore, choose, and live with choices that can kill any character, with well over a hundred possible endings and an ensemble cast performing their panic beautifully. This listing is the PlayStation 4 edition. It is best played like a movie night: lights off, friends shouting advice at the screen.

13. Little Nightmares — Complete Edition (PS4)

Little Nightmares — Complete Edition (PS4)

A small girl in a yellow raincoat wakes up on the Maw, a vast vessel catering to grotesquely hungry guests, and decides to leave. Little Nightmares is a puzzle-platformer built on scale and appetite: everything towers, everything reaches for Six, and almost nothing is explained outright. The Complete Edition for PS4 pairs the main game with its Secrets of the Maw expansion, so you get the whole grim voyage in one package.

14. Inside — INSIDE / LIMBO Double Pack (PS4)

Inside — INSIDE / LIMBO Double Pack (PS4)

Playdead’s Inside is a nearly wordless nightmare: a boy slips through a monochrome world of mind-controlled workers, flooded facilities and things that should not move the way they do. It is short, silent and engineered so precisely that its final act is still argued about years later. There is no standalone physical edition — the way to own it on disc is this PlayStation 4 double pack, which pairs Inside with the studio’s equally bleak LIMBO. Two modern classics of atmosphere on a single disc.

15. Until Dawn (PS5 Remake)

Until Dawn (PS5 Remake)

Eight friends return to a mountain lodge one year after a tragedy, and the night starts keeping score. Until Dawn is a branching slasher story built on the ‘butterfly effect’: every choice, hesitation and missed button prompt can decide who sees sunrise. This is the rebuilt PlayStation 5 version of the 2015 original, enhanced with new content — the definitive way to find out which of your friends you would actually survive a horror film with.
