I’m Staying with Family for the Holidays — These Space-Saving Finds Make Cramped Guest Rooms More Comfortable
Including a packable valet tray that keeps a nightstand tidy.
Writer Sian Babish has spent many holidays with family in England and Wales, and she counts herself fortunate to stay with them rather than pay for hotels. Because she always wants to be a considerate house guest, her packing is built around being mindful of shared spaces — taking up as little room as possible while still having everything she needs.
Amazon’s travel section, she notes, is full of clever gadgets that make the most of small guest rooms and bathrooms. Among her finds are a hanging toiletry bag, a pill organizer, and a lighted makeup mirror, plus a space-saving water bottle and a collapsible cup — the kind of pairing that makes getting water at night simple, without waking the hosts.

Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag
Described as Amazon’s best-selling toiletry bag, this one organizes beauty products across four surprisingly spacious compartments, with elastic loops to secure makeup brushes and beauty devices. The slender, briefcase-style bag slips easily inside a suitcase, and it comes from a luggage brand described as Oprah Winfrey-approved — presented as one more reason it is worth grabbing, especially on sale.
Taketoday Collapsible Cup
Babish says she often wakes in the middle of the night for water, so she grabbed this collapsible cup, along with the water bottle linked in the piece, to avoid disturbing her hosts by clinking glasses in the cabinet. It also doubles as a rinse cup for her toothbrushing routine, it is easy to clean by hand after trips, and the cup and its matching lid are dishwasher-safe.
Vlando Valet Tray
Babish calls this her favorite nightstand companion, and describes it as packable. At 8.5 by 8.5 inches, it holds her glasses, watch, jewelry, and phone, and its snapping corners let it fold flat and slip inside her front luggage pocket. At home, she uses it to store her smallest Squishmallows.
Niduoul Travel Laundry Bags, 2-Pack
These bags corral dirty clothing instead of hampers, and their waterproof linings mean they can also hold wet swimsuits and sweaty items. A shopper who used them on a long vacation is quoted as finding them very handy and able to hold a generous load of laundry, and a bonus noted is that they come in pretty designs, so they are not eyesores in guest bedrooms.
