Cost Per Wear: The Calculation That Makes Most “Bargains” Look Terrible

Cost per wear is the only clothing calculation that changes decisions, and it produces answers that feel wrong until you check them.

Price divided by the number of times you’ll wear it. A cheap item worn three times costs more per wear than an expensive one worn three hundred — and the gap is usually an order of magnitude, not a few percent.

Which means the sale rack is frequently the most expensive part of a shop.

Here’s how to actually use it, including the two places where it breaks down completely.


The Calculation

Simple arithmetic with an uncomfortable output.

Price ÷ times worn = cost per wear.

A worked example, using round numbers:

A coat costing 300, worn twice a week for five winters — roughly 200 wears. That’s 1.50 per wear.

An occasion dress costing 80, worn twice. That’s 40 per wear.

The dress cost a quarter as much and is roughly twenty-five times more expensive to wear.

And the version that catches people:

A 60 item worn 30 times is 2 per wear. Most things are worth that.

A 60 item worn 3 times is 20 per wear. Almost nothing is worth that.

Same price. Same shop. Same afternoon.

And what the calculation actually reveals:

The price you pay is a poor predictor of what something costs you. The number of wears is doing nearly all of the work — which means the useful question at the till isn’t “is this cheap” but “how many times will I wear it.”

Count backwards from something you already own.

Ask how many situations it suits.

One situation means occasional. Three or four means regular.

Check the laundry cycle.

Something in weekly rotation gets worn roughly fifty times a year. Something for a specific occasion gets worn once or twice.

And be honest about the season.

A summer item in a short summer gets a fraction of the wears a year-round item does.

Monthly: around 12.

Where It Breaks Down

Two genuine limitations, and they matter.

It has nothing to say about durability.

Which means it has to be paired with an assessment of whether the thing will actually last.

The Only Clothes That Actually Last Ten Years

And it says nothing about whether you needed it.

A garment with excellent cost per wear that duplicates something you already own is still a wasted purchase.

The arithmetic works fine on the individual item and misses the wardrobe.

And two more limits worth naming:

Some things genuinely justify a high cost per wear.

Cost per wear is a filter, not a verdict.

It tells you what something will cost you. Whether that’s acceptable is a separate question — and for some purchases the answer is legitimately yes.


The Categories Where It’s Brutal

Where running the numbers changes what you buy.

Occasion wear.

The worst category by a wide margin, and the one people spend most impulsively in.

Your fourth black sweater doesn’t get a quarter of the wears — it takes wears from the other three, so the total across all four barely moves.

And the categories where it’s generous:

Everyday basics, outerwear, everyday shoes, and underwear.

Move money from the occasional end to the daily end.

The Version That Works at the Till

Because nobody does long division in a shop.

The shortcut:

Divide the price by ten. Would you pay that much, in cash, each time you wore it?

How many wears would make this feel worth it?

Then ask whether that number is realistic.

Does it work with three things I already own?
